Ignorant newbie responds
ok haven't read the article yet but my own pc was purpose built for virtualising all of my work. By day I write software to run on Windows, but I always wanted to make the move to linux so Ubuntu64 is my main OS with everything else running in Virtualbox or under Wine.
For giggles at one time I was running Ubuntu, XP (x 2), Vista Ultimate, Fedora 8, and had 2 remote X sessions running simultaneously.
My brother in law who has used linux forever says there is a move towards virtualising everything and that in the future virtualised apps might be the norm.
