Consolidation for everyone is IBM's stated reason for releasing a Linux version of its System z mainframe. The new Enterprise Linux Server (ELS) is a stand-alone system specifically designed for Linux environments. According to IBM, the financial savings can be up to 80 per cent.

Now that anyone who wants to have an online presence via blogs or websites already has it, companies are offering all kinds of simple and cost-effective solutions. After all, while the number of customers may not grow so rapidly going forward, the needs of existing customers will definitely multiply as they use more and more storage space and bandwidth.

With System z mainframe revenues down 39 per cent - and MIPS mainframe capacity shipments off 20 percent in the second quarter - IBM is keen on boosting mainframe sales. And it wants to use Linux as a lever.

IBM has been crowing about its efforts to lure away Sun Microsystems customers, but it's not the only major IT vendor hoping to benefit from its continued woes.

Linux is called Unix-like and is not a true Unix operating system.
