I recently came across Zorin, an Ubuntu based distro that focuses on easing a Windows user's transition to Linux by theming it's interface to look like Microsoft's operating system.

Zorin OS 2.0 was born on the very first day of 2010. It is an Ubuntu-based distro and comes in a beautifully packaged ~1.4 GB ISO file for both the 32 and 64 bit architectures.

Zorin OS is one of those distributions that attempt to bring something different to the Linux desktop. But what exactly does Zorin OS bring to the table? An Ubuntu-based distribution with a Microsoft Windows 7 theme. The objective is to make it easier for Windows users to switch to Linux.

Depending on your expectations, purposes, and somewhat on your luck, there’s a good chance you might be satisfied with Zorin OS. Perhaps most notably I think it is an excellent alternative for those who dislike the new Ubuntu Unity interface.

Recently I popped down to the BT Young Scientist Exhibition here in Dublin. Walking through the exhibition, I stumbled upon Zorin OS, which caught my eye. So I stopped and asked Kyrill and Artyom Zorin the developers behind it all a few questions.

One could never argue the overall quality and effort put into this operating system. And while Mandriva undoubtedly remains among the distro giants, there are some quirks that shouldn't have slipped into this release. Other than that, it is a great choice for newbies and experienced users alike.

Recently I have had several people call me on mis-stepping the nomenclature surrounding the Linux operating system. But I get this a lot, and from all points of the spectrum: From newbies to power users. The central issue that I have is that this issue causes great confusion with newbies and anger with power users.

The first question I hear Linux newbies ask is what is the best distribution to use? I think right now plenty of linux desktop options exist for newbies however a few things set Ubuntu ahead of the pack in my opinion.
