Perl's 21st anniversary of release is next Thursday, 18 December. Perl 5 is already 14 years old. Though the language has seen many changes since 1994, it can't stand still. Perl 5.10 added many wonderful features and Perl 6 will change the landscape for programming languages, but what's the vision for Perl 5? How can the language stay relevant?

The Perl CPAN Testers have been suffering issues accessing their sites, databases and mirrors. According to a posting on the CPAN Testers' blog, the CPAN Testers' server has been being aggressively scanned by "20-30 bots every few seconds" in what they call "a dedicated denial of service attack."

I need to extend my programming knowledge, I know as a system administrator, I should automate everything I need to do more than twice and therefore I need more programming skills. I've been thinking of learning shell programming, as it is the most ubiquitous in Linux systems. I already know some shell programming and for most of the simple tasks I can easily write a small shell script.

Google has announced a new programming language for Android-based phones called Simple. Simple is a BASIC-like language, meaning that it has very simple syntax.
The interesting thing about this announcement is that this is the first effort to make writing mobile applications really easy, even for programming novices.
