Linux (pronunced: /ˈlɪnʊks/, lin-uks) is an operating system that was initially created as a hobby by a young student, Linus Torvalds, at the University of Helsinki in Finland. Linus had an interest in Minix, a small UNIX system, and decided to develop a system that exceeded the Minix standards. He began his work in 1991 when he released version 0.02 and worked steadily until 1994 when version 1.0 of the Linux Kernel was released.

GNU/Linux
Thanks to all the developers who created the GNU/Linux operating system.Starting from the GNU people who started the whole idea of a free as in freedom OS.And thanks to FSF who maintained the copyleft licenses like the GPL and its derivatives that maintained the freedom of the software under it.

It's a little bugging
It's a little bugging to hear people say that Linus Torvalds invented the whole operating system... and people call the whole thing "Linux", you know. Too bad RMS rarely gets some (pretty much deserved) credit for GNU.

What about X or KDE or GNOME though?
Why does RMS only demand recognition for himself and the GNU people?

From GNU/Linux FAQ at the GNU website
"Q: Many other projects contributed to the system as it is today, but they don't insist on calling it XYZ/Linux. Why should we treat GNU specially?
A: Thousands of projects have developed programs commonly included in today's GNU/Linux systems. They all deserve credit for their contributions, but they aren't the principal developers of the system as a whole, so they don't ask to be credited as such.
GNU is different because it is more than just a contributed program, more than just a collection of contributed programs. GNU is the framework on which the system was made."
From GNU/Linux FAQ at the GNU Project's website. You're well advised to carefully read the entire page. It's well worth it: http://www.gnu.org/gnu/gnu-linux-faq.html
Additionally that page also asserts that the GNU project is NOT arguing AGAINST mentioning other projects in the name as well. You are free to do it if you want to. In fact there already are distributions that do exactly that.
Also Gnome is part of the GNU project so the credit to Gnome is already implicit.
