The much awaited PCLinux OS 2010 was released in beta yesterday. Time for another celebration and another install test. PCLinux OS (PCLOS) is all I wanted, a stable KDE distro with the latest KDE 4.4.1 and Firefox 3.6. I spared no time and tried the beta on my Virtualbox setup.
I'm running a computer institute and I have new, middle and advanced users. People who know Linux very well and those who don't even know "L" of Linux. Recently, I've been trying different distros. Trying a distro is always based on the reviews I read on the web.
I used to be an avid PCLOS user. 2007 to 2008 I swore by it. It was THE distro for installing on PC’s. It supported codecs out of the box, worked when Ubuntu would not, and was quicker. I decided to take a look at the newest release of PCLOS this week.
Remember ThinkFree? There are many situations where Microsoft approaches or acquires projects to ensure it can successfully exclude competitors and make third-party software developers (including their end users) more Microsoft-dependent. Watch what Microsoft is up to with Bldender at the moment. Blender is a FOSS poster child.
I’ve been using Ubuntu 8.04 for about four days now and I must admit that that I still prefer PCLinuxOS 2007 as my favourite entry-level Linux distribution. However, I’ve compiled a list of 9 features I wish Ubuntu had, which may help me change my mind. (why 9? I couldn’t think of more at the time of writing, but more ideas will come to me)
With the impending release and the current development freeze, we took the compose release candidate for Fedora 12 x86_64 and have looked at how its performance compares to Ubuntu 9.10. In this article are our results, which actually show some rather large differences between Fedora and Ubuntu when it comes to the speed of the Linux desktop.
I will be installing PCLinux 2009 on one of my computers but I'm going to have to test it more to see if it deserves a space on the hard drive. Since I also use Mac OS X Leopard every once in a while, I decided to install PCLOS 2009 as guest operating system using Parallels Desktop to find out just how well it runs.
I have been making posters for many events now. Making a foss poster is a simple task. If you are one of those persons who like to decorate your desktop then you have got the knack already. The poster usually have a standard A3 size. The main thing about the poster is it should have something to draw people. So the first you have to choose a background. Browse through flickr and find some photos that denotes freedom, sharing etc.
