Fedora 11 has been released, it has faster performance and new security, virtualization, desktop and server features

Red Hat's community Linux effort, Fedora is out today with its latest release, Fedora 11. While Fedora Linux 11 is an optimized release, some might even call it a 'Spartan' release, though not for lack of new features.

A few more days from now, the latest and hopefully the greatest version of one of the most popular Linux distribution will be released. For those of you who loved Fedora 10, then the reasons are plenty for you to like version 11 (codename Leonidas) more.To get everyone excited, let's take a look at some of the many great features that the upcoming Fedora 11 will incorporate

Leonidas, is the 11th release of the Fedora operating system. Along the way there have been a few duds. Fedora 10 was a rock-steady release that introduced a slew of new features, and Leonidas is promising more of the same.

"There is an immense number of virtualization improvements and features in this release," Fedora Project Leader Paul Frields told InternetNews.com. "These things will affect anyone using virtualization across the board." Virtualization has been a big push this year for Linux vendor Red Hat (NYSE: RHT).

You may be wondering why I chose the particular title for this article. Well, you will learn soon. Today, we are going to test the latest (beta) release of the RedHat-based Fedora, version 11 named Leonidas, slated for release in mid-May.

Fedora 11 provides a sneak peak at what's coming in the more staid and stable Red Hat Enterprise Linux. During tests, eWEEK Labs found that the biggest improvements in Fedora 11 come in the area of virtualization, although Fedora still lags systems from VMware in functionality and polish.

Virtualization technology has long found a home in Red Hat's Fedora community Linux distribution. Ever since Fedora 4 emerged in 2005, virtualization technologies have continued to advance in the distro and that remains the case with the upcoming Fedora 13 release set for later this month.
