I've been waiting for months for the release of Freespire 2.0. Over the past two years I've downloaded and tried many distros but had been saving the "best for last."

A Linux distro is essentially a collection of software applications built into a complete operating system on top of the Linux kernel. Some distros, like Ubuntu, openSUSE, Fedora, and Mandriva have companies that back them, while others, like Debian, do not.

Today we updated the data used by the Linux/BSD Distribution Chooser aka distro quiz. The data has been adjusted to the current development status of the included distributions. We also added support for two new systems: NetBSD and KateOS.

Since I needed a system to last until the Ubuntu 8.04 release, my search has landed me back at Freespire 2.0. I know, I know… I said that I would never use Freespire again, all because of their patent deal with Microsoft. Now, I’ve had a year to cool off, and seeing as Linspire, the company that sponsors Freespire, is not doing so well these days, that I would give Freespire a chance.

Freespire, the free as in beer version of the Linspire Linux distribution, this month released Freespire 2.0, the first version of the operating system based on the popular Ubuntu distribution, and the first to contain proprietary codecs and drivers. Despite its attractive appearance, it left me with mixed feelings.
