Recently, the open source FileZilla FTP client became available for Mac OS X and Linux. Previous versions of FileZilla were only available for Windows.
Using the wxWidgets cross-platform user interface, FileZilla now can be used with a consistent look-and-feel on multiple operating systems. The only prerequisite is to have the wxWidgets package installed.

In the past I have used clients such as CuteFTP and WS_FTP, but these require payment of $30+, so my trials would always expire forcing me to change. Then, a couple of years ago, I came across FileZilla, one of the most highly downloaded applications from SourceForge.net. Not only is FileZilla open-source (under the GPL), but it is also available on all major systems - Linux, Mac, and Windows.

FileZilla 3 was just released and I have to admit that I’m pretty excited to see my favorite FTP client hit this big milestone. This version has spent several years in the making, and even though it doesn’t have many new features over the previous version there is something that is definitely worth noting: it’s now cross-platform!

There are a number of choices available with Ubuntu 8.04 for FTP. VSFTPD is a great choice based on the secure design and the increased SSL support in version 2.0.6. VSFTPD has replaced the WU-FTPD with a more secure ftp daemon. This ftp program is labeled as more secure, stable, faster and more scalable. VSFTPD has taken steps to minimize the privileges it takes to run the ftp program.

Filezilla is probably the most popular cross-platform FTP client around. Blue GNU caught up with Tim Kosse in the wake of the recent 3.0 release to take stock of this handy utility.

FileZilla Client is a fast and reliable cross-platform FTP, FTPS and SFTP client with lots of useful features and an intuitive interface.

FTP communication is not secure, all communication is plain text and can be easily captured. Despite this serious weakness, few do anything to secure it. There are simple ways to correct this with VSFTPD.

vsftpd, which stands for "Very Secure FTP Daemon", is an FTP server for Unix-like systems, including Linux. It is licensed under the GNU General Public License. It supports IPv6 and SSL. Since version 2.0.7 vsftpd supports explicit and implicit FTPS.
