Web shortcuts are a useful feature allowing you to search on many websites only by typing a short keyword in Konqueror's address bar. For example, typing wp:linux or gg:linux will automatically search for Linux on Wikipedia and, respectively, on Google, and display the results.

Canonical's Rick Spencer has written about two small changes that are happening to Mozilla Firefox in Ubuntu 10.04. The first is the default Ubuntu home-page with its search box in Firefox will now follow whatever the user has set as their default search engine in Firefox. The second change is that Canonical is changing the default search engine for Firefox in Ubuntu to Yahoo.

Being a web developer I have often wondered how one would go about making a search engine. I have looked for some tutorials to help me out with some of the algorithms, but off course I didn't find much since the search engine technology is worth A LOT (GOOGLE!).

Wouldn't it be cool if you could add search plugins for any search form to the Firefox Search Bar, instead of having to create the plugin yourself or wait for the site owner to stop being lazy and make one?

I like using the keyboard as much as possible because it makes me feel more productive. In my opinion, moving your hand over to the mouse is unnecessary the majority of the time because most applications provide very convenient keyboard shortcuts.

The folks behind DuckDuckGo have been deftly positioning the search engine as one you should be using, if you are tired or want to avoid snooping by Google and others like it. It is a message that I have bought into, and I think you will too, once you get to know how Google and other search engines track and bubble you.

The I'm Feeling Lucky button seen on google's home page is a feature that leads directly to the top-ranked page corresponding to your search keyword. You can avoid the search results page in cases you know the top-rated pages corresponding to your search.

Several months ago there there was a lot of debate about Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx switching to Yahoo! as the default search provider for Firefox. Well, it seems it was all for nothing, as the final version of Ubuntu 10.04 will ship with Google as the default search provider.
