Have you used Vista? It is like a foreign alien or something and the stupid pop-up, “Windows needs your permission”. What is pretty funny, is yes, the Mac commercial with the security guy is an accurate depiction.

The Vista release took so long

The Vista release took so long and XP matured. Most businesses will stick with XP as long as M$ allows. The OEMs are getting in line to install Linux on desktop machines. M$'s share is going down. It is just a question of how far. The world would be a very different place if M$, Apple and Linux had about equal shares of installations. Prices would be competitive. Open standards would be the norm. Lock-in would be much weaker.

I think Vista is the straw that

I think Vista is the straw that broke the camels back. After getting Windows XP from day one and wishing that I really stayed with Windows 2000 (don’t laugh, I still support a major company still using Windows 2000 and upgrade to Office 2003 from Office 97 last year) I have to draw the line at Windows XP.

I personally had no desire, let alone money to upgrade my system to bring it up to speed for Vista. Nowadays it’s easier to buy a new computer than upgrade an old one. I have an easier time smuggling an illegal immigrant from Mexico than getting a new box past the wife.

I tried Ubunta 6.10 and openSUSE 10.2 on my DELL Inspirion 1000. openSuse won out. It all comes down to the wireless card working. The battle was bloody. Neither side really won as now I probably could get it to work on Ubunta. It’s just openSuse was there when I finally got ndiswrapper to work. I hear version 7 Ubunta took wireless to a higher level. If I decide to switch again I might go back.

On my main desktop machine I am dual booting between Suse 10.2 and XP Pro. I spend 95% of my time in Suse10.2. It’s a great Windows replacement and I really mean it. With the exception of an odd ball game that refuses to work with WINE, Suse 10 just works. I am also proud to say I have 100% hardware compatibly with my desktop straight from the install. I have two more machines to go and then I will dump Windows altogether.

Vista really did push me to learn Linux. Thanks Bill!
