Tripwire is a security tool that checks the integrity of normal system binaries and reports any changes to syslog or by email. Tripwire is a good tool for ensuring that your binaries have not been replaced by Trojan horse programs.

The Secure Shell (SSH) and Secure Copy (SCP) make remotely performing system administration and copying files across secure links a painless operation. SSH and SCP use the same SSH protocol to protect network communications, but they rely on users knowing if they want a shell or to copy a file beforehand.

Designing for surveillance means, more or less by definition, designing a less secure, more vulnerable infrastructure.

What is OpenSSH ?

OpenSSH is a secure way of connecting to remote computers and transfering files. The OpenSSH suite includes the following programs (among others)

A vulnerability in the creation of symbolic links (symlinks) in the free Samba file and printer server can be exploited to attain access to files outside of predefined paths. Attackers can even get access to the system's root directory (/). To exploit the flaw (directory traversing), attackers first have to have an account on the Samba server that includes write access to at least one share.

Often, even if we do catch a virus, it's not so difficult to eradicate it using installed anti-virus—but if your system has been crippled, try using Linux to scan the drive for viruses instead. As any Linux veteran knows, one of Linux's greatest uses is fixing unbootable drives—recovering files, deleting files, and even killing viruses.

This past week we were inundated by PCs with viruses. Either people were bringing their infected machines to the office or calling us to come and get them. It was a madhouse. It wasn’t until I pulled out all the stops, with the help of my good old friend Linux, that I was able to finally say goodbye to those infections. But how?

GNU/Linux systems are immune to viruses is anything but myth. Viruses, malware are programs with destructive intentions and can be installed on any machine throgh various means. It becomes extremely easy if an attacker/cracker (not hacker for god's sake, you idiot) gets physical access to the machine. You can install a malicious code on your own computer if you want.

There's a ridiculous rumor running around the net that Linux is so inherently secure -- or so securely obscure -- that you shouldn't even bother running an antivirus on it. But frankly, that's just not true.
