In my last post I showed how you can add your own custom functions to the GNOME file manager with Nautilus Actions. This script will batch watermark images with Nautilus Actions and ImageMagick. It also works with KDE's Dolphin custom actions as well as the command line.

Usually when we talk about programs for editing images we think to graphic programs such as The Gimp or photoshop, but they are not the only alternative.

Actions? Aren’t all the menus, dialog boxes and commands enough, why would you want actions?

While you might associate working with images with big graphical programs like GIMP or Photoshop, ImageMagick is an entirely different animal. It is a suite of command-line programs for converting and manipulating images.

Virtually any photo manager lets you perform mundane tasks like adjusting contrast, adding a watermark, and applying effects to your photos. But even powerful applications like digiKam and F-Spot can't really help you when you need to perform the same action (or a sequence of actions) on dozens or hundreds of photos. For that you need a batch processing utility like Phatch.

In this tutorial I will show you several simple ways of creating ISO images with Ubuntu, from doing it with graphical applications included in the repositories or by using just the command-line. Each method below will get the work done, and you can start burning your images to a CD or DVD in no time.

You can use the convert command that comes with ImageMagick to extract parts of an image.

Web sites that run text squarely around images even when the images don't have even borders look a little lazy. pngslice slices an image into thin vertical images and generates a small chunk of HTML to align these slices so that the original image can be seen in a Web browser.
