It all started back in November, my Linux addiction that is. Being now that it’s August, I’ve officially been using Linux for 10 months. It feels like a long time, and I’ve learned a lot. For the past 6 months, I’ve been using it as my main OS. In fact, the company I work at runs entirely on Linux which can be heavily attributed to it’s success, but let’s not go there.

Ubuntu, the fastest-growing version of Linux, is starting to attract interest from the managed services industry. One prime example: Untangle, which develops security solutions for managed service providers, is preparing to add support for Ubuntu within the next few months, MSPmentor has learned.

I learned a little from my dalliances with Apple products. I learned a lot from PCs running DOS and Windows. I've learned the most about computers from Linux.

It's no secret that those of us who have learned to appreciate Linux and in effect all things that are related to FOSS have gained some wisdom that can be applied to our daily lives. I'm not an inspirational writer but I would like to share to non-believers some of the wonderful life lessons that I've discovered from using Linux.

Free and open source software (FOSS) is only beginning to find a foothold in computer science departments in North America. FOSS tools may be used in teaching or be the subject of research or special committees, but few departments include courses that introduce students to the FOSS community.

The past few months a bunch of very cool CentOS community members (and I am not including myself here) spend their time creating kernel modules for the stock RHEL5 2.6.18 kernel to extend hardware support. The result is now known as: ELRepo

A recent CNet article expresses the view that Linux adoption is most likely to come through the younger generation. Those who have already learned how to use a computer are far less likely to experiment with something new than those who are too young to have learned about computers yet.

While I definitely think some elements of Vista are definite improvements, 10 months of experience has shown me there are some things that just annoy me to my very core. Here are the three things that most make me wish I had the strength to move over to Linux — full time.
