AboutWelcome to Free Software Daily (FSD). FSD is a hub for news and articles by and for the free and open source community. FSD is a community driven site where members of the community submit and vote for the stories that they think are important and interesting to them. Click the "About" link to read more...
Sidenote: I wish this site was a bit more like reddit than digg. I like the up down rating, as well as the more compact layout. It's also rather annoying with the adds right to the left.
I like the design of reddit, it's minimal. They don't have lots of flashy graphics for the votes, it's much more simple, which is nice because it draws attention to the titles of the articles more than anything.
I also like their feature to allow you to vote up, and down. I think this is more fair, and is more simple than the "bury" system. Furthermore, their commenting system is great for threaded discussion, you can go many layers deep.
Yeah I don't want to completely block the ads because I think it's important that these people get paid to make this site. I don't mind looking at ads as long as their good ads. There placement is distracting rather than complementing to the page. Text next to text of different sizes doesn't look pleasing, image ads would be better. Also the ads are supported by Google, which isn't exactly all about free software. It would be better for the Free Software Magazine, and FSDaily.com to stop using Google, and to support another company that does support free software. Furthermore the link at the bottom of the page "Report MS ads!" is ridiculous, and if you really want to go full length it should say "report any non-free software ads!". Or rather, a more positive approach would be to say, "send us your free software ads!"
Pligg is one of the most retarded pieces of software out there too. Pligg is a pigg. But the staff of FSD are fixing that. They have already submitted a new module to go on top of Drupal to give digg-like functionality.
I'm afraid we can't please 100% of the people 100% of the time.
However, I am keen for having multiple CSSes so that people can choose between different themes on fsdaily. Budgetary constraints are the main problem for us. If you design one we can consider adding it. But I'd have to run it past our tech team (Tony) first. :)
As for voting up and down instead of bury... That is exactly what we are implementing. I don't like pligg's bury system it doesn't work well enough. We will be using the +1/-1 voting method for the FSD v2.
Commenting will also go many layers deep because that's how Drupal comments work.
Ads... if you have them at all someone will complain. But if we didn't have them this site would not be here.
Nobody, AFAIK, offers a non-proprietary ad service or ad filter. If Google offered it, I would go for it.
I would have said we say no to proprietary ads but then I would have to get someone just to answer all of the emails reporting proprietary ads AND I would run out of filters in Adsense in days, if not, hours. They only let you block a certain number of competitors domain names. So... I drew the line at MS ads... easy to identify only a few domains to block and makes the ads look so much less offensive not seeing anti-Linux and OOo ads there. The other thing is the "We say no to MS" is a reaction to all those sites that don't... like digg.
If you can suggest another agency that offers a better deal for us, I will definitely look into it.
Oh and we only get paid if you click on the ads. So if you aren't gonna do that... block away. :)
I can understand the limitations to blocking all non-free ads, but to block only MS is a weakness, and silly. I don't really want to participate in anything that is "anti" anything. Better to be positive. If there isn't a free software ad service, perhaps this is a call to action to create one, starting here.
Changing themes by the user is _not_ important. There needs to be consistent presentation for everyone, this is important. If someone doesn't like it they can go elsewhere, pleasing 100% of the people isn't a goal.
Sounds like Drupal will help out with some of these issues.
It would be great if you or someone else could start one. But I am in no position to do it. I simply do not have the time, skills or money to invest in setting up such a project.
However, I can contribute ideas (I do have some possibly very good ideas about what we could do in terms of free software advertising) and can help with promoting it... but that's about it I'm afraid.
[Edit] OOPS! I was wrong. You can't get at his profile. I are teh noob.
In some situations, firing up a TOR enabled browser would help get at those precious bookmarks, but not with Digg. Their hammer leaves nothing to be rescued.
Digg's UNIX/Linux section is ruined by bury brigades. It has gone on for a week and I consider quitting Digg altogether. Two guys whom I know have their submissions deleted by Digg.
The thing that worries me the most is what we miss. With my situation, they just *deleted* my comments, without warning, as well as without a message letting users know the messages have been deleted. Which makes me wonder *what else* is being deleted, not to mention entire stories. Digg is not about community. It's a profit game, and we the users loose in the end.
Oh they pretty much boycotted FSM and FSD apparently last time one of FSM's issues came out it got posted to digg and got a 100+ votes before 24 hours were up but they pulled it anyway amnd said it was spam. How can a free magazine that contains no advertising be spam? That was it for me. I marked Digg as lame.
What is kind of odd is that they run Debian as their OS, so they are obviously benefiting from free software... do they not know what free software is?
braydon, I like your gusto and initiative. But the problem i have is trying to attack digg. I think its just not worth it. We all know the eternal september of digg, and how it jumped the shark (i'll cite "the key" as being the day it turned for myself), and we know the digg team's penchant for censorship and not-listening-to-the-community.
I would much rather (we) focused attention on constructively helping communities that (we) like (reddit, fsdaily, and to some extent slashdot).
